Ear Wash For Your Huggable Basset
A homemade ear wash that work
We have more than a few bassets so how we clean their ears and what we use is very important.
Making sure they are clean is first and for most. Second is trying not to brake the bank.
With any tip we offer please check with your vet. I work closely with ours and ask a lot of question each and every-time I find something new that sound good. Our vet is always willing to tell me if the new idea is good or not. Coming up with a new ear wash was not hard to find. But finding one that works took a little longer.
Here is what you will need. Apple Cider Vinegar, Witch Hazel, and Tab Water. You will need a measuring cup and a large baby bottle with nipple.

Remember that you are going to put this in your dogs ear. Please take care and keep everything clean and fresh. Do not use old vinegar that has been under the counter for years. You can get both of the vinegar and witch hazel at any super market. We are going to mix just under 1 cup so you will need the larger baby bottle. The kind of nipple does not matter because you will need to enlarge the hole before using it.

First lets get the baby bottle ready. Take the the top of the bottle with the nipple. Make a small cut in the nipple with a steak knife. (Be Careful) This will aloud more of the cleaner to get into the dogs ear. |

With the nipple on the baby bottle cut and the bottle washed out you are ready to mix you ear cleaner.
Remember that each bottle will only hold 1 cup of liquid so we have to start with a smaller mixture. |
Now you will need a measuring cup to pour the right amounts of each component. The baby bottle will only hold a total of 1 cup. There fore we have to start with small amounts. |
The mixture is very simple. Pour 1/3 cup of water into your baby bottle. Then pour 1/3 cup of Apple cider vinegar into your baby bottle. And last pour 1/6 cup of Witch Hazel into the baby bottle. This will make just under a full bottle of ear cleaner.
Each time you use the clean remember to sake the mixture just before using it. The Witch Hazel will only stay mixed for about 10 secs before floating to the top. This normal just remember to sake each time you put it into your dogs ear. |
Now that you have the bottle mixed you are ready to clean your basset's ears. Sake the bottle handing a finger over the slit that you cut in the nipple. Stand over your basset with one leg on each side. This helps hold him in place. Now insert the rubber nipple into his ear until the bottle stops. (The nipple is shorter than the dogs ear canal. Squeeze the bottle and fill the ear canal with the cleaner. Then hold the bassets ear down and rub over top of the ear canal with his own ear covering the canal so the cleaner stays in. Rub for 25-30 sec and then repeat on the other side. When you finish turn your basset lose and he will shake the cleaner out.
Repeat this every 30 days. |
